The Story Of Mike Roberts |
| In the fall of 1978 Mike Roberts felt a desire
to do some volunteer work in the Dallas area. Not knowing much
about the local needs, Mike contacted a local church and asked
the pastor to tell him where a real need was for volunteer work.
The pastor told Mike that there was a real need for visitation
of children in local hospitals in the Dallas area. He said that
during the weekdays parents could not be with their kids because
they had to work, and these were lonely hours for these children.
Mike began his work at first by going part time on the weekends
and whenever he could work it in during the week, because
you see Mike was an insurance adjuster and had some break
times during the week. Mike dressed up as a clown and carried
a doctor’s black bag filled with “stuff”
for the kids. His name was “Dr. Rainbow”, and
so the story grows....
Dr. Rainbow (Mike) would walk the halls of three Dallas area
children’s hospitals going bedside to over 150 kids
a day making balloon animals, doing magic tricks, and giving
the gift of JOY!

Mike was most often called upon to work with children
in trauma units and burn units where children had been physically
abused by parents or other care givers. Six months into his
volunteer work Mike walked into his bosses office and resigned,
telling him that he had another job to do, clown at local hospitals.
That was the easy job. Next Mike had to tell Lynn, his wife.....
Without a paying job, Mike started a nonprofit organization
called The Rainbow Community, and for the next two and one-half
years Mike continued his work in Dallas hospitals.
One day
Mike asked someone where these abused children went after
they were released from the hospital, and he was told that
they would live with families in the local area, but there
was a real shortage of these homes. That statement started
a fire in Mike’s heart, but what could he do? He was
already a full time volunteer with very little money, how
could he take these children into his home?

It was six weeks to the day after
Mike had asked the question “Where do these kids go”
that a man Mike hardly knew asked him if he needed a big house
with five bedrooms and cheap rent?
Well, Mike was smart enough to know that after 2.5 years
of living day to day on the kindness of his friends and supporters,
that this was a sign!
Mike and Lynn took the house and Rainbow House for Children
was born

|
At first they only took one or two children,
but eventually Rainbow House grew, a bigger house was built,
and in 15 years Mike and Lynn cared for a total of 65 children,
and Mike worked with hundreds of families whose children had
discipline problems, through his Parent Coaching Service.
Mike’s speaking career began after people started asking
him to speak on parenting skills.
Then one day a corporate executive said Mike, “You
should speak to corporations, because the skills you use for
communicating and motivating kids are the same.” “Mike,
all we have in corporate America are bigger kids.” Mike
was smart enough to know, this was a sign, and so today Mike
speaks all over the country to corporations everywhere sharing
his messages on motivation, parent communication skills, and
personal development.

Mike's newest project is MyParentAdvisor.com,
a private, members only, web site dedicated to meeting the
needs of today's parents.
Mike believes that the MyParentAdvisor web site will meet
the needs of today's busy parents by providing them with his
latest E-books on parenting. In addition, the MyParentAdvisor
web site will have a bi monthly newsletter, GREAT Parenting,
for parents, and a parent COACHING Service linked directly
to Mike so parents can ask him immediate questions and receive
immediate answers to their greatest parenting problems.
Mike believes that the best of both worlds means that an
author of parenting material needs to make himself available
to his readers so that while they are using the principles
contained in the book, they can get immediate questions answered,
that's the MyParentAdvisor way of doing things.
|
 |
|
|
|
It is for this reason that Mike created the
MyParentAdvisor web site.
Mike will use his over 20 years experience working with the
kids at Rainbow House, and the hundreds of families he COACHED
over those years, to provide parents with the most up to date
answers for the situations they are facing.
In addition, Mike is available to bring his entertaining
and educational "Live" Raising Kids Without Raisng
Your Voice Seminar to Corporations and Organizations throughout
the country.
